Following the European Commission's consultation on a possible revision of the acquis communautaire launched in July 2004, the European Federation of Journalists issued a statement to presents its views on the existing EU legal framework and the improvements that need to be done.

The EFJ insists that journalists must enjoy authors’ rights protection and benefit entirely
from the current acquis communautaire in the field of intellectual property rights. Integrity of information, quality and independence of journalism become even more important in the face of media concentration and widespread use of new technologies. The EFJ insists in particular on the need to protect moral rights, and works created under an employement contract. A EU authors' rights contract law based on the German model would provide necessary guarantees for journalists to defend their rights.
