The signatories demand that the Greek government reverse this decision without delay. Public broadcasting is a precondition of pluralism and of the quality of TV and radio programmes. The signatories express their full solidarity with their Greek colleagues and call upon the media across Europe to condemn this authoritarian suppression of public-service broadcasting. The massive, imposed cuts in public employment are an inadequate response to the economic and financial crisis. The decision by the Greek government to deprive the public of a service to which it has a right constitutes an attack on freedom of expression and democracy.
